The ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza has claimed the lives of 228 Palestinian journalists since October 7, 2023, according to the latest update following the confirmed death of reporter Ismail Abu Hatab on Monday.
Abu Hatab, widely known for his work with local media outlets and humanitarian exhibitions, was killed in an Israeli airstrike, further deepening what Palestinian officials are calling a systematic targeting of press workers.
The Government Media Office in Gaza held Israel, along with the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, directly responsible, accusing them of complicity in what it described as an ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.
The office issued an urgent appeal to the International Federation of Journalists, Arab Journalists Union, and global media entities to document these crimes, push for international legal action, and pressure governments to end the silencing, imprisonment, and forced disappearance of Palestinian media professionals.
Simultaneously, Palestinian prisoner rights organizations confirmed the death of 22-year-old Louay Faisal Muhammad Nasrallah, who had been held without charges under an administrative order since March. He died at Soroka Hospital following transfer from Negev prison, with his family affirming he was in good health prior to detention.
Nasrallah’s death brings to 73 the number of Palestinians who have died in Israeli prisons since October 2023. Human rights groups cite torture, medical neglect, and inhumane conditions as primary causes. Some cases reportedly involve forced disappearances and withheld information by Israeli authorities.
A joint statement from Palestinian legal and humanitarian groups denounced Israel’s prison system as another component of the larger genocidal project, alleging the weaponization of illness as a means of extermination.
These developments come amid escalating Israeli bombardments in Gaza City, where new airstrikes have killed dozens of civilians, including women and children. Multiple international bodies continue to label the campaign a prolonged genocide.
